Spin the Wheel: A Fair Yes-or-No Wheel and Random Picker

Quick answer

Type your options (one per line) or pick a preset such as Yes / No, then press Spin. The winner is chosen with your browser's cryptographic random generator before the wheel starts turning, so every slice has exactly the same chance: 1 in the number of entries.

Spin the wheel to settle a decision fairly. Use the yes or no wheel for a quick answer, or type your own list of names, numbers or ideas. Every slice has exactly the same chance of winning.

How the wheel picks a winner

Most online wheels spin first and work out the winner from where the animation happens to stop. That ties fairness to animation timing. This wheel does it the other way round: it picks the winning entry first, using your browser's cryptographically secure random generator, then animates the wheel to land on that slice. The spin is just for show; the chance of each entry is exactly 1 divided by the number of entries.

P(an entry wins) = 1 ÷ number of entries

Yes / No: 1 ÷ 2 = 50% each. Six dinner ideas: 1 ÷ 6 ≈ 16.67% each.

Odds over several spins

Fair doesn't mean even in the short run. With a yes or no wheel:

Spins Chance of the same answer every time Chance of at least one "Yes"
2 50% 75%
3 25% 87.5%
5 6.25% 96.88%
10 0.20% 99.90%

Three identical answers in a row happen a quarter of the time. That's normal randomness, not a broken wheel. The same is true at a roulette table, where streaks of one colour are far more common than most players expect; our chance calculator shows streak odds for any probability.

Good uses for a random wheel

  • Yes or no decisions you're happy to leave to chance.
  • Picking a name for a giveaway, a classroom question or who pays for coffee.
  • Running orders and teams: tick "Remove the winner" and spin until everyone has a place.
  • Choosing what to eat, watch or play when nobody can decide.

For number-only draws, the random number generator can pick hundreds of results at once, with or without repeats.

Wheel of fortune vs roulette wheel

A decision wheel and a roulette wheel look alike, but they're built for different jobs. On this wheel every slice is equally likely and nothing is at stake. On a European roulette wheel each of the 37 pockets is also equally likely, but a winning single number pays 35 to 1 instead of the fair 36 to 1. That gap is the 2.70% house edge explained in our roulette guides.

Frequently asked questions

Is the yes or no wheel really 50/50?

Yes. With two entries each has exactly a 1 in 2 chance. The result is picked with crypto.getRandomValues, a cryptographically secure generator, and the animation simply stops on the slice that was chosen.

Do bigger words or slices get more chances?

No. Every entry gets an equal slice and an equal chance, however long its name is. If you want one option to be twice as likely, add it twice.

How do I pick a running order or teams?

Tick 'Remove the winner after each spin', then keep spinning. Each name drops out once picked, so you get a fair order with no repeats.

Can I share my wheel?

Your entries stay on your device. To reuse a list, copy the text box and paste it back in next time.
