What Axie Infinity is
Axie Infinity is a game by Sky Mavis where you collect creatures called Axies and battle with teams of three. It runs on Ronin, a gaming blockchain Sky Mavis built for it. Its token, AXS, is used for governance, staking and some rewards, and the in-game resource for breeding is SLP.
In 2021 Axie was the face of "play to earn": players in the Philippines and elsewhere earned a living from it until token prices collapsed. AXS peaked at about $165 in November 2021. You can see how far it is from that peak in the live stats above.
How players earn in 2026
- Origins (card battles): free starter Axies let you play without buying anything. Rewards are concentrated at the top of seasonal leaderboards, so casual players earn little or nothing in tokens.
- Land and Terrariums: land gameplay updates in July and August 2026 (versions 1.1 and 1.2) added accessories, land items and "Atia's Flame" output, with evolved Axie parts boosting what you produce. You need land or land items to take part.
- Atia's Legacy (MMO, in development): an open-world game with squad combat and guilds. A closed alpha ran in September 2025 with about 1,000 players, and the team has reported millions of pre-registrations. There is no public launch date yet.
What it costs to start
You can play Origins for free. To compete seriously you need NFT Axies, and land costs more again. Prices for Axies and land move with AXS, so check the marketplace on the day rather than trusting an old guide.
Our verdict
Play Axie for the game and the community, not as an income. Free play is fine for learning; paying for a team only makes sense if you enjoy ranked play and accept that token rewards can shrink. Keep an eye on Atia's Legacy: if it launches well, it could bring new players and demand back to the ecosystem.
