How to play baccarat in 60 seconds
- Bet on Player, Banker or Tie (or more than one).
- Two cards each are dealt to the Player and Banker hands.
- Count the hand: aces are 1, 2 to 9 are face value, and tens and face cards are 0. Keep only the last digit: 9 + 6 = 15, which counts as 5.
- Naturals: if either hand has 8 or 9 from two cards, both stand and the hand is over.
- Third cards are drawn by fixed rules (below). Nobody chooses.
- Closest to 9 wins. Player pays 1:1, Banker pays 0.95:1, Tie pays 8:1, and Player and Banker bets push on a tie.
"Player" and "Banker" are just the names of the two hands. You don't play the hand, and you can bet on either one.
The third-card rules
The Player hand draws a third card on 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7.
If the Player stands, the Banker draws on 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7. If the Player drew, the Banker follows this table, based on the Banker's total and the Player's third card:
| Banker total | Banker draws if the Player's third card is | Stands if it is |
|---|---|---|
| 0, 1, 2 | Anything | – |
| 3 | Anything except 8 | 8 |
| 4 | 2 to 7 | 0, 1, 8, 9 |
| 5 | 4 to 7 | 0 to 3, 8, 9 |
| 6 | 6 or 7 | Anything else |
| 7 | – | Always stands |
You never have to remember this: the dealer, or our game, applies it. It's worth knowing because it explains why Banker wins slightly more often. The Banker acts second and draws with knowledge of the Player's third card. Our baccarat rules and drawing table guide goes through it case by case.
The odds of every bet
We worked through every possible deal from an 8-deck shoe exactly:
| Bet | Wins | Pays | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banker | 45.86% | 0.95 to 1 | 1.06% |
| Player | 44.62% | 1 to 1 | 1.24% |
| Tie | 9.52% | 8 to 1 | 14.36% |
| Tie (where it pays 9:1) | 9.52% | 9 to 1 | 4.84% |
A few other numbers from the same calculation:
- About 34.3% of hands end on a natural, with 8 or 9 on the first two cards of either hand.
- The Player draws a third card on about 50.3% of hands and the Banker on about 43.5%.
- Both hands draw on about 31.8% of hands, so you see six cards about a third of the time.
Baccarat strategy that matters
There isn't much to decide in baccarat, so the strategy is short:
- Bet Banker. It has the lowest house edge in the game. Player is a close second.
- Skip the Tie. At 8:1 it costs about 14 times as much per bet as Banker.
- Watch for no-commission tables. They usually pay only half on a Banker win with 6, which changes the edge. Our baccarat strategy guide has the commission math.
- Ignore patterns. Streaks on the scoreboard look meaningful, but they don't predict the next hand.
Free baccarat vs real-money and live baccarat
Our game uses the same rules and payouts as a standard punto banco table, so the hand results and house edge match what you'd face for real. Online real-money games are usually RNG tables like this one, or live dealer tables streamed from a studio. Live games deal far fewer hands per hour than fast RNG play, so the same edge costs less per hour, though not per bet.

Frequently asked questions
How do you play baccarat?
You bet on the Player hand, the Banker hand or a Tie. Both hands get two cards, and a third card may be drawn for each according to fixed rules. Tens and face cards count 0, aces 1, and you keep only the last digit of the total, so 7 + 8 = 5. The hand closer to 9 wins.
Is Banker or Player better in baccarat?
Banker. Even after the 5% commission on Banker wins, it has the lowest house edge in the game: 1.06% in 8-deck baccarat against 1.24% for Player. The Banker hand wins more often because it acts after the Player and its drawing rules use the Player's third card.
What happens to my Player or Banker bet on a tie?
It's a push: your bet comes back. Only Tie bets win when the hands are equal. In 8-deck baccarat that happens on 9.52% of hands.
Can you play baccarat for free?
Yes. This game runs in your browser with play chips and no sign-up. It uses an 8-deck shoe and standard punto banco rules, so the hand results come up at the same rates you'd see at a real table.
Do baccarat patterns or scoreboards predict the next hand?
No. Each hand is dealt from a well-shuffled shoe, and the result of the last hand doesn't change the next one in any way you can bet on. The bead road in our game is there because casinos show one, not because it helps.
Why does the Banker bet pay 0.95 to 1?
Because the Banker hand wins more often than the Player hand. Without the 5% commission, Banker would have a player edge of about 1.24%. The commission brings it back to a 1.06% house edge.
