The rules of this free blackjack game
We set the game up with rules you'd be happy to find at a real table, so what you practise here carries over:
| Rule | This game | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Decks | 6, reshuffled after 75% | The most common shoe game |
| Soft 17 | Dealer stands (S17) | Cheaper for you than H17 by about 0.18 points in our simulation |
| Blackjack payout | 3:2 | A 6:5 table costs about 1.36 points more |
| Double down | Any first two cards, and after a split | More chances to press good hands |
| Splits | One split; split aces get one card each | Standard for shoe games |
| Dealer peek | Yes, with an ace or ten up | You never lose a double or split to a dealer blackjack |
| Insurance and surrender | Not offered | Insurance is a poor bet anyway |
With perfect basic strategy, these rules gave a house edge of about 0.47% over 10 million simulated hands. In plain terms, if you bet 10 chips a hand for 1,000 hands, you'd expect to be down about 47 chips on average, while real sessions swing far more than that in both directions.

How to use the strategy hints
With hints on, a yellow box under the table shows the basic strategy play for the hand you're holding. It comes from the same chart our simulator played, the one on our blackjack strategy chart page. The game counts every decision you make and shows how often it matched the chart.
A good way to practise:
- Play 50 hands with hints on. Read the hint before you act, especially on soft hands and pairs.
- Turn hints off for 100 hands. Your match rate keeps counting. Aim for 95% or better.
- Note the hands you miss. They're usually soft 18, 12 against a 2 or 3, and pairs like 9,9 or 4,4.
- Check odd spots in our blackjack calculator, which explains why each play is right.
Hints never change the cards. They just tell you what a player using perfect basic strategy would do.
Odds you'll see while you play
Some numbers to keep in mind as the hands go by:
- Blackjack comes about once every 21 hands (4.75% in a 6-deck game).
- The dealer busts most with a 5 or 6 showing. With an infinite deck and S17, the dealer busts about 42% of the time from a 6 and 42% from a 5, but only about 17% from an ace once they've checked for blackjack.
- You lose more hands than you win. You act first, so when you bust you lose even if the dealer would have busted too. Blackjacks paid at 3:2, doubles and splits are what close most of that gap.
| Dealer upcard | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | A |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dealer busts | 35.4% | 37.4% | 39.4% | 41.6% | 42.3% | 26.2% | 24.5% | 22.8% | 23.0% | 16.7% |
These are exact infinite-deck figures for a dealer who stands on soft 17, after the dealer has checked for blackjack with a 10 or ace showing. We calculated them by working through every possible dealer draw. The bust gap between 2–6 and 7–ace is the reason basic strategy stands on stiff hands against small cards and hits them against big ones.
Free blackjack vs real-money blackjack
Free play and real-money tables deal cards the same way. What changes is what's at stake, and often the rules:
- Check the payout. Many real-money tables, especially low-limit ones, pay 6:5 on blackjack. In our simulation that pushed the house edge from 0.47% to 1.83%. Our 6:5 vs 3:2 comparison shows the full numbers.
- Check soft 17. H17 tables raised the edge to 0.65% in our simulation and change three plays on the chart.
- Expect swings. A blackjack session is noisy. The edge only shows up clearly over thousands of hands.
- Live dealer games play at a slower pace. Our live blackjack guide covers how they compare.

Frequently asked questions
Is this free blackjack game rigged?
No. Cards come from a real 6-deck shoe that's shuffled with your browser's cryptographic random generator and dealt in order, and the dealer follows fixed rules: draw to 16, stand on 17. There's no money involved, so there's no reason to tilt it either way. The rules themselves give the house a small edge, which is how real blackjack works too.
Can I play blackjack for free without signing up?
Yes. This game runs in your browser with play chips. There's nothing to download, no account and no email. If your chips run out, the balance resets to 1,000.
What are the rules of this blackjack game?
Six decks, dealer stands on soft 17 and peeks for blackjack with an ace or ten showing, blackjack pays 3:2, you can double on any first two cards including after a split, you can split once, and split aces get one card each. There's no insurance and no surrender.
What does the hint button tell me?
It shows the basic strategy play for your hand against the dealer's upcard: the move that loses least over the long run for these rules. The game also counts how often your decisions matched it, so you can practise until you're close to 100%.
Does practising free blackjack help you win real money?
It helps you lose less. Perfect basic strategy cuts the house edge to about 0.47% under these rules in our simulation, but it can't make it negative. Free play is the best place to learn the chart before any money is at stake.
What's the chance of getting a blackjack?
About 4.75% of hands in a 6-deck game, roughly one hand in 21. You need an ace and a ten-value card as your first two cards: 2 × (24/312) × (96/311) ≈ 4.75%.
