Morpho Explained: Vaults, Isolated Markets and How DeFi Lending Works on It

Quick answer
Morpho is a decentralised lending protocol. Borrowers use isolated markets, each pairing one collateral asset with one loan asset and a fixed liquidation threshold (LLTV). Lenders usually deposit into Morpho Vaults, where a curator spreads funds across markets. It is one of DeFi's largest lenders, but deposits still carry smart-contract, curator and liquidation risk.
| Type | Permissionless DeFi lending protocol |
|---|---|
| Borrowing | Isolated markets: one collateral, one loan asset |
| Lending | Morpho Vaults managed by third-party curators |
| Key setting | LLTV (liquidation loan-to-value) per market |
| Contracts | Immutable core contracts |
| Scale | Deposits reported above 10 billion USD in 2026 |
What is Morpho?
Morpho lets anyone lend or borrow crypto through smart contracts, without a bank. Its core, often called Morpho Blue, is deliberately minimal: a small, immutable contract that creates lending markets. Risk decisions are pushed out to the people who create markets and the curators who run vaults, instead of one central governance setting them for everyone.
Isolated markets and LLTV
Each market has exactly one collateral token, one loan token, a price oracle and an LLTV. If your loan grows past that LLTV relative to your collateral's value, your position can be liquidated. Because markets are isolated, a problem with one collateral type doesn't automatically spill into others.
Example: with an 86% LLTV, borrowing 800 USDC against 1,000 USD of ETH puts you at 80%. A 7% drop in ETH price would push you over the threshold.
How Morpho Vaults earn yield
Most lenders don't pick markets one by one. They deposit into a vault, and the vault's curator decides which markets get the money and how much. Curators are usually risk firms or DeFi teams. The yield you see is the interest borrowers pay, minus any fee, and it changes all the time.
This means you are trusting the curator's judgement. Read the vault's exposure list: which collateral types it lends against and how concentrated it is.
Why Morpho grew so fast
Morpho grew because of efficiency and integrations. Higher LLTVs and lower gas use make borrowing cheaper, and apps such as Coinbase have used Morpho behind the scenes to offer crypto-backed loans. Morpho reported deposits passing 10 billion USD and later records in 2026, and added fixed-rate lending products.
Morpho vs Aave in one paragraph
Aave runs large shared pools where governance sets parameters for every asset. Morpho runs many small isolated markets and lets curators set strategy. Aave is simpler for beginners; Morpho gives more choice and can offer better rates, at the cost of needing to understand who curates your vault.
Main risks to know
- Smart-contract bugs, even in audited, immutable code.
- Curator risk: a vault can lend against weak collateral.
- Oracle or depeg events can trigger liquidations quickly.
- Withdrawals can be delayed if a market's liquidity is fully lent out.
Frequently asked questions
Is Morpho safe?
Morpho's core contracts are audited and immutable, but no DeFi protocol is risk-free. Your main risks are the markets your vault lends into and liquidity during stress.
What is a Morpho Vault curator?
A third party that chooses which lending markets a vault allocates to and sets limits. Curators earn fees and carry reputational risk.
What does LLTV mean?
Liquidation loan-to-value: the maximum loan size relative to collateral value before a position can be liquidated.
Does Morpho have a token?
Yes, MORPHO is used for governance of the protocol.
